One dank and sturdy night

One dank and sturdy night the message came in on flashes of light. It whined and it whinnied and took on a high pitch. It deafened the drivers who drove into the ditch. Those who were chewing spat up their gum. Some got tinitis and a permanent hum. Some got infections or holes in their tongues. Others ran down into basements and cellars. The light made its way to these underground dwellers. Noone mistook what it meant for an instant but nobody spoke it. They stared into the distance.
