I met Bob sometime around 1981 or '82. I can't peg it exactly but maybe he can. His band "the Promises" were opening for "Poisoned" (Art Bergman's band at the time) at Whispers in North Vancouver. "Whispers" was a top-40 club and it was weird that Art would be there...so I went. In the post punk world there was bound to be some drama and tension. Art's performance that night was full of his trademark fuck-you spit, swagger and fire. I would say it was quietly legendary. The Promises were also great. They played Sonics covers, rocking old soul and some hard charging western style rock n' roll with plenty of vocal harmony. Right up my alley. I approached them after the show and introduced myself saying I was a stage tech for Brandon Wolf and that maybe I could get them an opening slot. Yes. I was a pathetic impresario from the git go. Our bands later hooked up for many shows and our friendships bloomed like the weeds we were.
Cut to Christmas 1994 when Odds were playing “the Medicine Ball” at Vancouver’s Town Pump. It was a Children’s Hospital charity event started by Bob Rock and everyone was donating their services. In the spirit of good will Bob stepped in, on a dare, to be the guitar tech as our guy did not live in Vancouver. All he asked for was, “a laminate and a cool tech nickname”. We called him “midnite” that night. He hated it. That’s how nicknames are supposed to work. Nicknames bounce off Bob. None stick. Bob ended up working for the Odds, as his day job, for six more years. Was it really six? I guess he finished us off.
Mike Crozier from “the Promises” (later they were “the Last Corvairs”). Went on to become a guitar player with Barney Bentall & the Legendary Hearts (Brandon Wolf).
Bob Kemmis’ new day job is teching for Keith Scott of the Bryan Adams Band. His real deal is his own music…which is pure genius.
